iOS 5 images suggest iPad 3 could have a retina display

Last month we reported how a display created by Samsung could pave the way for a retina display iPad 3, now a TechUnwrapped tipster has discovered some images in iOS 5 for iPad that might just lend more weight to the rumours.

The tipster found images in both the new Twitter.framework and also Apple’s Newsstand app for magazines & newspapers. The Twitter images appeared to have a resolution of 1536 x 2048 – twice the size of the images needed for the current iPad’s 1024 x 768 display, and the Newstand image had a resolution of 1536 x 800.

Whilst the discoveries certainly give hope to all those holding out for a retina display iPad 3, I personally don’t believe the rumours that we saw earlier in the week suggesting the next generation iPad could be released later this year – it just seems too soon.

If you bought an iPad 2 in March how would you feel if a retina display iPad 3 was released later this year? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
