Control Siri from afar with the Iris 9000 Voice Control Module

Iris 9000 Voice Control Module

Inspired by HAL 9000 from Arthur C. Clarke’s Space Odyssey, the Iris 9000 Voice Control Module from ThinkGeek is the first accessory that works with Siri and allows a user to control their iPhone 4S remotely from across the room.

The device looks just like HAL 9000, except it features a built-in iPhone dock. All you have to do is place your iPhone 4S inside and tap the included micro remote to active your Siri assistant. You can then give commands from up to 50 feet away and Iris 9000’s speaker will amplify Siri’s responses, as demonstrated in the video below.

What’s great about this accessory is that is has a built-in microphone and allows you to use it as a speakerphone to make phone calls from across the room — leaving you completely hands-free. Its best feature, however, is that its large red light on the front flickers along with Siri’s voice.

I can certainly see the appeal in a device like this – such as setting up appointments and reminders at the click of a button without having to take your hands away from your keyboard – but unless you’re a fan of Space Odyssey, the Iris 9000 isn’t going to appeal to you. I mean, it’s hardly the prettiest iPhone accessory.

The device is only compatible with the iPhone 4S, but if you’re interested, it’ll be available in Spring 2012 from ThinkGeek for $59.99 (approx. £37.53).

What do you think of the Iris 9000?
