Infinity Blade set the standard for iOS gaming when it first hit the App Store last year. It was the first game built on the Unreal Engine 3, and it really pushed the boundaries of mobile gaming to provide a true console-like experience.

However, Infinity Blade is no longer the benchmark, because it has a successor. For the past year, its creators, Epic Games, have been working on Infinity Blade II, and it’s just hit the App Store with a torrent of glowing reviews from some of the industry’s biggest publications.

The game is priced at £4.99 ($6.99), and it’s a universal title so you only have to purchase it once to play it on both your iPhone and your iPad.

If you have any interest in gaming on iOS devices, this is the game you should be playing this evening. “Infinity Blade II sets the standard for big experiences on the go,” according to Mark Walton of GameSpot UK, who describes the release as “an essential purchase for any iOS-toting gamer.

Mark Brown of Eurogamer agrees: “Chair’s unreal sword-swinging romp still puts up a hefty fight, and most of the added loot adds just enough to bring Infinity Blade fans back for a second, vengeful stab at victory.

One of the most generous reviews comes from IGN’s Justin Davis, who labeled the release the App Store’s new “reigning king.” In his review, Davis said: “Infinity Blade’s touch-powered sword-slashing combat has always been a blast, but the sequel infuses it with much more depth.” He concludes: “Infinity Blade 2 is a must own – it is the App Store’s killer app.

While the release will run well on the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the original iPad, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod touch, to experience the game in all its glory you’ll want a device with Apple’s dual-core A5 chip, which is either the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2.
