I’ll be honest, when I launched this website back in March 2011, I really didn’t know what to expect. At times, it hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to juggle blogging with a number of other projects and interests, plus my work as a web designer. Overall, writing about the latest Apple news has been a fantastic experience, but after two years, I’ve decided it’s time for a change.

I haven’t decided exactly what form that change will take yet. It might involve a relaunch of Macsessed with a slightly different focus – tips and product reviews rather than news, or the start of a brand new website. Ultimately though, whatever I decide to do, there won’t be any new posts on here for the foreseeable future.

As regular readers will know, I haven’t run this site completely alone. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Killian Bell for all of his excellent posts, and guest bloggers Ben Roethig and Robert Falck for their contributions.

I’d also like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read, share, and comment on our posts over the last two years.

I’ll still be keeping up with latest Apple news – I’m still obsessed with the company and its products, and I’ll continue to share my thoughts over on Google+ and Twitter.

EA and Maxis today officially confirmed that the Mac edition of SimCity will be available to download via Origin on the 11th June, with pre-purchasing starting tomorrow. In addition, customers who already own the PC version of the game will be able to download the Mac edition at no extra cost.

Rather than porting the PC version over to the Mac, EA says that Maxis has created a native version optimised for OS X, which perhaps explains why us Mac users have had to wait a few months longer for it than our PC owning friends.

As is the case with SimCity for the PC, both standard and deluxe versions of the title will be available for the Mac, and the game supports cross-platform play – meaning PC and Mac users build cities alongside each other.

SimCity for Mac requires a system with at least an Intel Core 2 processor, running OS X 10.7.5 Lion or later. EA says it hasn’t yet determined whether it will have Retina display support or not.

I’m definitely going to be getting a copy, what about you?

As reported by Engadget, the technology offers data speeds of 20 Gbs in both directions, making it twice as fast as the current version, and supports the transfer of 4K video.

Intel says it plans to start initial production of the new Thunderbolt, which has been given the codename Falcon Ridge, later this year. Thankfully, it will be backwards-compatible with current generation cables and connectors.

The company also previewed an early prototype of its next-generation Thunderbolt controller, codenamed Redwood Ridge, which will be integrated into some of its fourth-generation Core processors due for launch later this year.

Developed in collaboration with Apple, and first introduced on the MacBook Pro in 2011, Thunderbolt is now available on all Mac models except for the Mac Pro.

Although third-party manufacturers have been a little slow to release Thunderbolt accessories, there are now a large number of Thunderbolt compatible docking stations and storage devices available from the likes of Belkin, Matrox, LacCie and Western Digital. PC makers such as Lenovo and Acer have also begun to adopt the technology.

A job listing posted by Apple over the weekend has stoked speculation that the company could introduce fingerprint technology in a future version of the iPhone. The listing calls for somebody capable of testing various sensors with LabTool and FA software, but it’s the location, at Apple’s “Melbourne Design Center” in Florida USA, which is perhaps more significant.

Melbourne Florida is the previous home of AuthenTec, a company that specialised in fingerprint scanning technology, and whom Apple acquired for a reported $365 million back in July last year.

From the job description:

LabTool – Develop, maintain, update and optimize the “LabTool” software that is used for lab evaluation and characterization of the Melbourne Design Center sensor ICs. This includes adding new features as specified by the analog and digital design engineers. Updating the tool to work with new sensors. Automating lab test and characterization. Provide support and debug capability to all groups within Apple that use the tool.

Numerous analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities have predicted that Apple’s next smartphone will feature fingerprint technology. In a report released last month, Kuo says the iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint sensor located underneath its Home button, which will improve the security and usability of the device.

According to report from The Wall Street Journal, Apple plans to start the production of the iPhone 5S during the second second quarter of this year.

As noted by the The Loop, Apple has issued a new Support Document revealing that it will be changing the way its VPN On Demand feature works on iOS devices running iOS 6.1 and later. The change has been forced by a lawsuit that Apple lost against patent holding firm VirnetX, back in November last year.

From the support document:

Devices using iOS 6.1 and later with VPN On Demand configured to “Always” will behave as if they were configured with the “Establish if needed” option. The device will establish a VPN On Demand connection only if it is unable to resolve the DNS name of the host it is trying to reach. This change will be distributed in an update later this month.

Essentially, the change will cause the most problems for enterprise users, who instead of being able to connect to virtual private networks automatically, will need to turn on VPN manually by going to Settings > General > VPN on their devices.

Apple says it will address the issue with alternatives in a future software update.

The Cupertino company was ordered to pay $368.2 million in damages after a federal jury in Texas ruled that its Facetime technology used on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Mac computers; infringed upon virtual private network patents owned by VirnetX.

Announced this week, the GeForce GTX 680 promises “truly game-changing performance that taps into the powerful new GeForce architecture to redefine smooth, seamless, lifelike gaming;” as well as state-of-the-art features that no other graphics card has offered before.

Some of those features include NVIDIA GPU Boost Technology, which maximizes clock speeds to push performance; support for four concurrent displays; an NVIDIA SMX Engine that delivers twice the performance per watt of previous generations; and NVIDIA CUDA technology, which takes advantage of the GPU’s processing cores to accelerate the most demanding tasks.

The GeForce GTX 680 also supports the Windows operating system, which means it is ideal for Mac Pros that run Windows in a Boot Camp partition.

You can buy the GeForce GTX 680 from EVGA.com in the coming days, priced at €599.90 (approx. £590).

The Mac Pro itself is no longer available to purchase in Europe, of course — unless you can find an Apple Reseller that still has them in stock. But rumor has it the Cupertino company will finally launch a new model later this year.
